RIVIERA BEACH, Fla. (CBS12) — A step forward to cruises setting sail once again, which has taken a huge hit during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Port of Palm Beach is scheduled to lead the nation in resuming cruises, planned for July 2. Bahamas Paradise Cruise line will resume sailing from the Port of Palm Beach for Freeport. The past year has been incredibly challenging for the cruise industry and Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line was no exception. The ship “Grand Classica” is docked in Freeport, but is expected to arrive here any day now. Bahamas Cruise Line is now accepting bookings for the two-night trip to the Bahamas on the “Grand Classica.” If it all goes as planned, it could be the first cruise to leave a U.S. port since the pandemic started. “My husband and I had to cancel our 25th wedding anniversary trip and this is going to be it,” Arlene Colavito said. Colavito already bought her tickets for the two-night trip to the Bahamas. She’s also an independent travel agent.She says her phones have been ringing with people interested in booking a cruise. They’re looking forward to Florida’s billion dollar cruise ship industry getting closer to reopening. “We don’t realize how many people were affected by the CDC stopping the cruise lines,” she said. “It starts to look like the bright side light at the end of the tunnel.”Earlier this month, the CDC had set new guidelines for cruise lines to begin voyages with volunteer passengers to help test whether the ships can sail safely during a pandemic.
